Playing games on IVR ? Not just quiz!

So far, “Games using IVR ( Interactive Voice Response)” systems meant a quiz where the caller is given multiple choices to answer a question and every correct answer scores him a point! Not anymore ! Unicom Systems, a Delhi-based Cloud telephony start-up has come up with a prototype of Snake IVR games to be played on the web browser using telephone only!

Play Games on IVR

What is the game all about ?
It is the “Snake Game” which is found in almost all mobile phones from the most basic to high end smart phones. During initial period of Mobile Phone in India, the snake was a very popular game on Nokia Mobile phone models like N5110, 3310 etc.

In this game, one visits a web page where the “Snake” Screen comes up. Then he/she dials the number and is connected to the IVR. After that, they can control the movement of the snake, movement to left, right, top or bottom by pressing 4, 6, 2 and 8 on the phone keypad or mobile!

So, if you have a land-line phone and a PC with internet, one can play this game! Of course, most probably, in order to play “Snake Game” one may not require all these! A PC can play many games!

I liked the idea of playing games using IVR! The integration seems to be simple like triggering the keys to control the movement of the snake using DTMF digits!

Using this idea, some one may come out with more interesting, innovative IVR games some time soon! If any one came across any other interesting IVR Game application, please leave a comment!

    Hi Sumit ,
I am part of the team that has built this hack.

    >> Would love to know what kind of platform these guys are using to power an app like this.
Short answer the question : We have Erlang daemon running which subscribes to all DTMF events from our telephony/switching platform and relays them to a websocket. The Javascript on the html page uses this information it gets from the socket to move the snake in a particular direction.

For a more detailed explanation, you can drop me an email.
