Is Cloud Telephony the Real Deal for SME Industry?

As optimism increases for a worldwide economic recovery, SME’s are looking forward to renewed growth in the coming months.

It looks like the beginning of a long and fruitful Indian summer for the embattled SME industry with some experts calling it the decade of the SME industry. As a result, SME’s must seek competitive advantages that will enable them to compete with big businesses on a level footing. In this context, cloud telephony can indeed be a strategic weapon as not only does it provide the necessary infrastructure that forms the communication system on which businesses are based, but it also serves as source of cost savings, operational improvements, streamlining of processes, allowing SME’s compete with big businesses on an even kneel.

However, there are some misconceptions coming in the way of broader cloud telephony adoption like –

  • We are too small – Small companies, by their definition, have small budgets, limiting their IT spending.
  • We performed well in the past, no need to change now – It is difficult to accept change. Businesses hide their reluctance to change under the garb of “why fix it, if it ain’t broke”.
  • Internal effort to implement – People love status quo. It is tough to drive change when training is involved. The various excuses one hear are “it is too complicated”, “why do we need to change what we were doing earlier” etc.
  • Cost of hardware and software – Additional costs are a big deterrent for most SME’s. There is a reluctance to commit to new technologies unless the benefits are quantified.

The Truth about Cloud Telephony

These misconception tend to ignore the bigger picture – with economic recovery so clearly in view, the seeds of growth must be planted now for SME’s to remain competitive in the future. By investing in cloud telephony now (when the economy is on the cusp of recovery) SME’s will be in a position to expand sufficiently in the next few years and enjoy the benefits of scale when the economy goes into overdrive.

Rebuttal #1: Unlike other technologies, cloud telephony is relevant in the early growth stage of a startup. It does not matter if your business is in the early growth stage or maturity stage or exponential growth stage. Cloud telephony services grow with your business requirements. You can provision additional resources in a snap without suffering any time lags.

Rebuttal #2: Legacy phone and mobile systems are not equipped for handling high volume of calls. You need a PABX system for that. Since that is not an option (high costs, high maintenance), you need a better alternative i.e. cloud telephony.

Rebuttal #3: Since cloud telephony provides managed services you will not have to worry about the day to day running of your telephony systems. The format is very intuitive, user friendly and easy to learn. Just record your welcome message, create departments and you are ready to roll out your product and services.

Rebuttal #4: No capital investments required. Subscription based pay as you go model. No software or hardware upgrade. Upgrades are rolled out to all users at one go.

Cloud telephony emerges as the real deal for SME’s looking for renewed growth in the coming months as the economy hits its stride rapidly. Those that aspire to world class would be well advised to turn Cloud telephony into a strategic weapon by taking full advantage of its technology, features and capabilities expanding at an ever increasing rate.
